Lyari is one of Karachi's most impoverished localities. Drugs and violence are a common feature of daily life here. Battered roads and overflowing, water-clogged gutters plague the entire area. Basic amenities for its inhabitants are few and far between. But this destitute area is also the heart of all sports-related activity in the city. This essay highlights the amazing resolve with which the young generation of Lyari is battling the harsh realities that confront it on a daily basis; how it is using the bare minimum sports facilities available to it to forge a better, healthier and more prosperous future for itself.
